'Silver Spoon,' 'I am a HERO' win big at Shogakukan Manga Awards

Publisher Shogakukan Inc. has announced the winners of the 58th Shogakukan Manga Awards, with "Fullmetal Alchemist" creator Hiromu Arakawa's "Silver Spoon" taking the prize for the boys' category.
The manga series, which runs in the weekly Shonen Sunday comic magazine, is set in an agricultural high school in Hokkaido. An animated TV adaptation will premiere on Fuji Television Network Inc.'s "noitaminA" midnight animation slot later this year.
Hideyasu Takahashi's "Kaito Joker" ("Mysterious Joker"), the winner in the children's category, is serialized in CoroCoro Comic and follows Jack, a boy who disguises himself as a phantom thief named Joker.
Other winners include Hinako Ashihara for "Piece," which runs in Betsucomi, and Kengo Hanazawa for "I Am a HERO," which is serialized in Big Comic Spirits.
The story of "Piece" revolves around a girl who is pulled into a mystery involving the death of her high school classmate. The title was adapted into a live-action TV series that aired in 2012.
Horror manga "I Am a HERO" depicts a society afflicted with a disease that turns people into zombie-like creatures.
One of Japan's longest-running manga awards, the Shogakukan Manga Awards was established in 1955 to recognize excellence in manga works.
This year, the panel of judges included manga artists Mitsuru Adachi, Akira Oze, Kaiji Kawaguchi, Chiho Saito, Kenshi Hirokane and Buronson, along with writers Mitsuyo Kakuta and Yu Nagashima (also known as Bourbon Kobayashi).
An awards ceremony will be held at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo on March 1. The winners will each receive a bronze statue and 1 million yen ($10,700).
