'Dragon Ball' creator Akira Toriyama honored at Angouleme comic festival
Manga artist Akira Toriyama, best known as creator of the "Dragon Ball" and "Dr. Slump" manga series, was honored with the Prix Special 40e anniversaire (special 40th anniversary award) at the Angouleme International Comics Festival in France.
Launched in 1974, the 40th festival was held Jan. 31-Feb. 3 in the French city of Angouleme.
The award was announced on the final day.
The Angouleme comic festival brings together "bande dessinee" (comics for French and Belgian readers), Japanese manga, U.S. comics and other cartoons from around the world.
The selection committee nominated 16 comic book artists for the accolade, with artists who joined this year's festival casting their votes. In addition to Toriyama, Japanese artists Katsuhiro Otomo and Jiro Taniguchi, as well as creators from Europe and the United States, were mentioned.
The selection committee then picked top five nominees with the most votes before giving the top award, the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angouleme, to Dutch cartoonist Willem. But it was Toriyama who received the most votes from his peers.
Meanwhile, the second volume of "Quai d'Orsay" written by Abel Lanzac and illustrated by Christophe Blain won the best comic book award. U.S. artist Glyn Dillon was given the special jury prize for his "The Nao of Brown," while U.S. comic author George Herriman's representative work, "Krazy Kat," received the heritage prize. The "Krazy Kat" comic strip series was published in newspapers from 1913 to 1944, leaving a profound influence on comic artists that followed.
From Japan, Mari Yamazaki's "Thermae Romae," Atsushi Kaneko's "SOIL" and Kengo Hanazawa's "I am a HERO" were nominated for best comic in the Official Selection in 2013, with Yukinobu Hoshino's "2001 Nights Stories" and George Akiyama's "Anjin San" up for an award in the Heritage Selection. "Chi's Sweet Home" by Kanata Konami was also picked for the Young Readers' Selection.
